Its known that teaching is one of the most complex professions.The increase emphasis on standards and accountability code for the need of knowledgeable and highly skilled teachers. For that, every teacher must ask himself am i skillful enough to deal with such profession?. for sure there is more to good teaching than skill, but there is no good teaching without it .Being skillful teacher mean that I can make something that can be seen, learn how to do skills with its continuous improvement. What is sure is that skillful teachers are made and not born, skills that they have are learned and developed through practicing. skillful teachers know what should be learned in sequence, clear about what is achievement, and clear about what to do to help students attain it. Finally, the most important trait for being skillful teacher is to be learner, by mean that learning skills have no end. Teacher always grow, add to his/her knowledge,skills, and effectiveness.
Being skillful teacher is not that easy, it requires time, hard work, and experience. To be skillful, the teacher should be knowledgeable of the materials/contents and students, valuing students through showing interest in them, being a good listener, communicating high expectations to them as individuals, being accessible, and being fair and respectful. Also the teacher should provide safe and positive environment for students to participate, ask questions, and give different points of view.
ReplyDeleteEach teacher can tell if she or he is a skillful teacher or not.When I think about the teachers that I've known who are really good at what they do, it seems to me that they, first of all, have a tremendous understanding of the content of what it is they're teaching and they never lose that expertise. So knowledge about the subject matter and really feeling comfortable with that is very important.
ReplyDeleteBut, at the same time, they take that subject matter knowledge and they link it to a sense of how kids learn the variety of ways that they can engage children in learning and have them really achieve the full extent of their capabilities. And then I would say that today's really competent teachers skilled teachers also have a whole new set of possibilities, or resources, that evolve around their use of technology. But the technology's not separate. It's very much a part of how they think about content, how they think about learning, and how they think about teaching.
Being a skillful teacher is not an easy mission. Of all the things that are essential to high performing schools, nothing is more important than the teacher and what that person knows, believes and can do. A teacher's skill makes a difference in student performance, not only in achievement scores, but also in students sense of fulfillment in school and their feelings of well-being. If you're that kind of teacher, then you're a skillful teacher!
