Dysfunctional families

Dysfunctional families

Definition: Are families that were healthy in certain period of time. The normal functioning of the family is interrupted by stressful circumstances such as death, divorce, sickness, violence.

*What distinguish healthy families from dysfunctional ones are the following:
    1. Emotional expression in healthy families is allowed and accepted.
    2. Rules are explicit and consistency is present with some flexibility.
    3. Healthy families allow for individuality and responsibility.
    4. Children are respected and don't fear emotional and physical abuse

*What goes wrong in dysfunctional families?
Deficient parents: are parents suffering from chronic physical or mental illness that lead to their inability to take care of their children. Consequently, children play the role of their parents caretakers.

Alcoholic parents:  they tend to be chaotic and unpredictable, rules that apply one day dont apply next day.

Controlling parents: they fail to allow their children to assume responsibilities appropriate to their age.

Children from such families have behavioral and emotional disorder.

*Ways that teacher can help their student:
1. learn more about the students strength: skills, talent, personal interests are tools that teachers may use to shape their instruction.
2. Remember they are kids first: they are not scary, dangerous, or aggressive. They need teacher support and affection.
3. Support students inclusion: this could be done through cooperative learning activities, peer interaction.
