Some teachers may have much problem in encouraging students to respond to questions. Observing of any class tend to show us that there are several students who don't volunteer responses, often because the teacher call on students who are quick to response. If teachers care about all students, then they must encourage non volunteers to respond. when teachers become more knowledgeable about their students interests, it become easier to prompt students by asking them questions that are related to their area of interest. A good method for increasing non volunteer participation is by asking them questions that they will be likely to answer successfully, and when they respond a positive feedback from the teacher encourage them to continue responding. As a general rule, the most effective way to encourage students to participate is to deal with them sincerely since no studnet will volunteer if his/her respose will be meet by sarcasm or hostility.
As you said Ammar, from my observations in making my journals for the teaching diploma courses I found that most of the teachers call on students who are quick to respond. It is really important for teachers to encourage the non volunteers students and gave them the chance to express themselves and be able to continue their responding even if their responses are not complete or they were wrong, and always gave them feedback.
ReplyDeleteThat's right haneen, such behavior from the teacher may form a thought in students minds that their respond or participation in class are not valued by the teacher which code them to stop responding to avoid any criticism or laugh from peers. what teachers should work on is convincing students that a false response is not the problem and no one born intelligent, however being out of participation is the most worthy behavior.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very important problem for the skillful teacher who aims to have a class full of energy and motivation. As their teacher we should know how to make them more active and not shy.Try to involve the shy student in the class as a whole - ask them to fetch a book for you, get them to clean the board and so on. These tasks don't involve interacting with other students, but they do allow them to be a part of the class and this will make the classroom a less threatening environment for them as they have some (however little) control over it.This is one strategy but there are many the teacher can be creative in them.
ReplyDeleteWhat motivates student participation? This is a question a lot of teachers ask themselves when trying to figure out how to get and keep their students engaged in classroom activities. Think about what motivated you as a student. What could the teacher do to make you want to learn and actively participate. since as u said Ammar, if teachers care about all students, then they must encourage non volunteers to respond.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this point! Teaching can be fulfilling and enjoyable, yet it could be also frustrating when you plan a lesson and only few students participate. You ask a question and no one answers. You ask for volunteers and the same hands are up. But I believe that good teachers can help students by engaging them enough to encourage them to participate.
ReplyDeleteThis what happens, most teachers motivate the volunteers students and ignore the non volunteers who need this motivation . They should give them the chance to express themselves. The teachers should be fair with all students (gifted, moderate and disabled)
