Questions to be planned !
Its not surprised if we say that planning question is in the same importance with lesson planning. Good planning considers the kind of thinking the teacher wants the students to engage in .Planning questions specifically and in details can make a big difference in the quality of a class discussion and the development of students understanding and higher level thinking. what teachers should care about is the invitational language of the question by mean framing questions that allow participation of all students and avoid questions that close down thinking. Its known that asking questions is one of the strategies used by teachers to check for understanding so planning for such questions is an important step to be done. The most valuable questions are those that are open by mean questions with multiple answers to have the chance to get the higher number of responses in class, in contrast to the closed questions that accept one response.

A teacher should ask students questions that have them think at different levels. She should have students retrieve information from memory, make new connections, analyze, apply and evaluate what they learn, and finally come up with something new and creative. Asking students questions that are based only on knowledge is not enough. All these different aspects should be targeted for better learning to take place.
ReplyDeleteThats right joumana, questions that a teacher ask should be varied according to all levels of taxonomy. Its not fair to build all questions only on memorizing or knowledge level. In instruction the first thing that teacher should take in consideration is developing the level of thinking and to develop students skill to ask questions and not only answering them.
ReplyDeleteQuestioning is done in the class room for many purposes. We could say that it crosses nearly all the areas of performance in teaching. Questions are used when instructing(Foreshadow, Extend thinking, Frame big idea), used to asses the students learning when we check for their understanding or make intend to make an instructional decision, they are used to promote cognitive and emotional engagement(motivate students, stimulate curiosity, connect to student experience), and to manage the learning environment(control the students' behaviors, boost confidence), so different levels of thinking are triggered to match these different purposes.
ReplyDeleteBut we should know that questioning is not a unitary skill, it's like an entire toolbox and the tools that we select should match to our purpose, also teachers should make sure that all students need to be engaged in conversation with higher level questioning, and most importantly is to plan questions to meet your objectives, when planing, the teacher should consider the type of thinking he/she wants students to engage as well as the sequence of factual and higher order question , it's important to have the students think at different thinking levels.
